A rare mid 18th Century Russian gold thimble, by Heinrich Franz Russell of St. Petersburg. With beautifully hand chased dimpled ‘knurling’ to the domed cap forming an attractive ordered and concentric pattern. The sleeve and ribbed exterior is richly textured and engraved with linear detailing and chased floral motifs. The rim is angle cut to resemble a folded check ribbon with an un-engraved shield shaped device centred to the exterior. Expertly hand crafted in rich 18 carat yellow gold, marked ‘72‘ zolotniks alongside the makers mark ‘H.R‘, for Heinrich Franz Russell of St. Petersburg. The thimble is accompanied by its original period fitted case and is dating to circa 1850.
